Today, Matt and Lena Photography are whisking you away to the beautiful Algarve region in Portugal… take it away, guys!
“On the very south western tip of Europe lies the Algarve, a region of Portugal lucky enough to claim a very beautiful Mediterranean-like south coast and a rugged, dramatic west coast of the Atlantic. Most of the great discoverers set out to explore the world from these shores, on their way to Africa, the Americas or the Orient.”
“The Algarve is a place for surfers, sea food lovers and the romantics. From its beaches to its mountains to the colorful fisherman villages with cobble stone streets, the Algarve is full of charm.
We love living here as the landscape is so rich and diverse and beaches so varied. Each little town has its own food speciality, weather it’s mouth watering sea food of the south coast, or cured hams and chorizo sausage further inland, knocked back with Medronho, the local spirit also known as ‘fire water’.”
“Foia mountain is the highest peak in the Algarve. On a clear day the view from the top encompasses the terraced farms of the hills, the gently rolling pastures of the coastal plains, and miles and miles of coastline. In the spring and summer you’ll often see racing and mountain bikers hurtling down the steep winding mountain roads surrounded by the magnificent Cork forests that are very common in this region.
A little while back we photographed at a monastery that sits near the tip of Foia just outside of Monchique. The light was lovely as it filtered through the grand Oak trees, and the court yard of the monastery itself was filled with so much romantic charm.”
“Having worked as photographers on cruise ships, we have seen most of the world coast line, and that has brought us to some pretty amazing beaches, and we have to say that the ones in the Algarve are the most varied and amongst the most beautiful.
In the east the beaches are broader and packed with sand dunes, whereas further west they are composed of small bays and coves, backed by cliffs and grottos. Then there are the rugged, wild stretches along the west coast that have a completely different look and feel. These beaches are popular with the surfers especially in the winter. The west coast of the algarve stands witness to some of the most spectacular sunsets. The evening light is amazing and it’s often our location of choice to photograph.”
“In February and March fields of wild thyme, and lavender come into bloom, leaving traces of their aromas lingering in the air. And as winter comes to a close the almond trees flower with white and pink petals. The Algarve truly is the place for adventure and romance all year round, and it’s always so beautiful to photograph, that’s why we absolutely adore it.”
Os Agostos, located between the coastline and the highlands of Algarve, 5 kms outside Santa Barbara de Nexe. The grounds are unique, there is an 18th century home, a converted barn house and stables, a beautiful pool and gardens all surrounded by farm land and orange groves.
Grande Real Santa Eulália Resort & Hotel Spa, near Albufeira. The hotel is a picturesque venue with views of the ocean. Down some stone steps there is a long stretch of beach with nooks of old colorful fishing boats anchored on the sand.
Quinta Pomona, beautiful and secluded wedding venue located in Silves. The name Pomona is a tribute to the goddess of fruit and orchards, and this country house venue is appropriately named as it it nestled amongst an orange grove blossoming with fruit and flowers.”
